Etnus TotalView 6.4 Adds Linux Features, Distributions and Compilers.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

NATICK, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 6, 2004

Etnus, the provider of TotalView(R), the most advanced debugger on Linux and UNIX UNIX

Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics).
, today announced the availability of TotalView 6.4, which increases support for Linux including new distributions and compilers, and Linux-specific debugging features.

The release also further extends TotalView's industry lead in data analysis capabilities.

The 6.4 release includes support for SuSE ES 8.2 on Linux x86, Red Hat EL 3.0 for Linux IA-64, and Red Hat Fedora A free distribution of the Linux kernel from Red Hat along with a variety of open source utilities. Technical support is not provided for any of the Fedora distribution, only for Red Hat's full fee-based subscription of Linux.  Core 1 along with important new compilers such as Intel(R)'s Fortran 8.0 for Linux. TotalView also now supports Sun One Studio Compiler Collection, C/C C/C Center to Center
C/C Combustion Chamber
C/C Command/Control
C/C Crew Chief
C/C cabin cruiser (US DoD)
C/C chief complaint (medical)
C/C Channel-to-Channel
C/C Communication and Collaboration
++ and Fortran version 8.0.

This release also brings two significant GUI (Graphical User Interface) A graphics-based user interface that incorporates movable windows, icons and a mouse. The ability to resize application windows and change style and size of fonts are the significant advantages of a GUI vs. a character-based interface.  additions that enable unprecedented access to program data. The Expression List Window gathers and groups expressions that software engineers want to evaluate during debugging sessions. Developers simply place any expressions of interest in one customizable, feature-rich window to gain new insights on those variables' behavior every time the program is stopped. A companion window, the Data Window also lets users monitor interesting variables and structures. The new Data Window is a powerful feature, allowing users to perform "what-if" analyses, transform data to understand its affect on the program, set watchpoints on data, and much more. These features are available on Linux and the broad range of UNIX platforms that TotalView supports. (For a list of supported platforms see www.etnus.com).

TotalView 6.4 also bolsters Etnus' leading position in threads debugging, adding support for multi-threaded core files on Linux as well as the Native Posix Threads POSIX Threads is a POSIX standard for threads. The standard defines an API for creating and manipulating threads.

Libraries implementing the POSIX Threads standard are often named Pthreads.
Library. Advanced Linux kernel features such as pre-linked shared libraries and the exec-shield feature are also part of this release.

"Providing the best debugging solution for our customers as they adopt new Linux compilers, distributions, and features is a top priority for Etnus," comments Mary Kay Bunde, Director of Market Development, Etnus. "We continue to add features and support for new compilers and Linux distributions to maintain and extend the leading position we have established among Linux tools."

TotalView is an advanced 32- and 64-bit graphical debugger providing software engineers with complete control over applications written in C, C++, or Fortran. It is the premium debugger for applications that use multithreading Multitasking within a single program. It allows multiple streams of execution to take place concurrently within the same program, each stream processing a different transaction or message. , MPI MPI - Message Passing Interface , or OpenMP, offering advanced features, such as heap allocation debugging, extensive data analysis, easy viewing of standard template library The Standard Template Library (STL) is a software library partially included in the C++ Standard Library. It provides containers, iterators, algorithms, and functors.  data, and a vast array of unique capabilities to find and eliminate problems in complex applications.
