At SUPERCOMM 2003, to be held June 1-5 in Atlanta, the Ethernet in the First Mile Alliance The Ethernet in the First Mile Alliance (EFMA) is a non-profit international industry consortium. It has been established in 2001[1] to promote standards-based Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) technologies and products and position EFM as a key networking  (EFMA) SUPERDemo will include technologies for Ethernet service delivery in subscriber access networks and product demonstrations highlighting the IEEE p802.3ah Ethernet in the First Mile Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM), also known as IEEE 802.3ah, is a collection of protocols specified in IEEE 802.3, defining the Ethernet in the Access networks, i.e. First/Last Mile.  project.

The EFM project includes solutions for first-mile services over both fiber and copper; and work dedicated to enhancing Operations, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) characteristics of Ethernet. Member companies with products in each of these four areas will exhibit real-world EFM deployment scenarios.

The EFMA was founded by leading network infrastructure and service providers to promote the use of Ethernet in the First Mile subscriber access networks and support the IEEE P802 standard process. Member companies include: Accton, Agere Systems, Analog Devices, Broadcom, Cisco Systems, ElectriPHY, Ericsson, Extreme Networks, Harmonic, Hatteras Networks, Infineon Technologies, Intel, Metalink Broadband Access, NTT, Panasonic Semiconductor Development Company, Paradyne, Passave and Spirent Communications.

The EFMA demonstration is one of eight SUPERDemos featured on the SUPERCOMM exhibition floor. The other technology demonstrations will be presented by the following organizations:

-- BCD Forum - Broadband Content Delivery Forum

-- MPLS Forum - Multiprotocol Label Switching (networking) Multiprotocol Label Switching - (MPLS) A packet switching protocol developed by the IETF. Initially developed to improve switching speed, other benefits are now seen as being more important.  Forum

-- IPCC - International Packet Communications Consortium

-- MEF - Metro Ethernet Forum The Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) was founded in 2002. It is a non-profit international industry consortium, dedicated to worldwide adoption of Carrier Ethernet networks and services.  

-- OIF - Optical Internetworking Forum The Optical Internetworking Forum (OIF) was organized to facilitate and accelerate the development of next-generation optical internetworking products. The OIF produces Electrical, Tunable Laser, Very Short Reach Hardware Interfaces.  

-- RPR Alliance - Resilient Packet Ring Alliance

-- SIP Forum - Session Initiation Protocol Forum
