Ethanol plant.
The Jamaica Broilers Co. will build an ethanol plant to tap in to
the growing use of the liquid derived from sugar cane as a substitute
for gas, reports AP (July 26, 2006). The company, Jamaica's leading
poultry supplier, will begin construction on the US$17 million (euro13.5
million) plant in September. Dedini, a Brazilian ethanol company, will
provide construction expertise and equipment, said JB's VP
Christopher Levy. The plant will produce 60 million gallons of
fuel-grade ethanol a year. It is expected to be operational by May 2007.
Local gas stations will likely begin selling gasoline containing 10%
ethanol in June 2007. The state-run Petrojam refinery now produces 150
million liters of ethanol a year.
