How often do you find twenty-five compositions by twenty-four different composers in one book? Essential Keyboard Duets, Volume 2, joins the Essential Keyboard Library of solo pieces--those big thick books with little-known gems tucked in and around old favorites. Gayle Kowalchyk and E. L. Lancaster have followed a similar blueprint with their duet album.

There is much to like in this set. Selections ranging from early to late intermediate levels fill a lot of space for ensemble growth as well as pleasure playing. The layout and alignment of secondo se·con·do

The composer biographies at the end of the book are spread across two pages in two columns, an appealing layout that invites a second look. The primo and secondo parts are usually equal in difficulty and share melodic interest. A wonderful example of four-hand overlay and interplay is found in the Schumann's little-known Gartenmelodie. This book could well serve as a mini-course in historic four-hand music from the eighteenth, nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. However, I was surprised to find short shrift of Franz Schubert, since he is the composer par excellence of four-hand literature.
