Essential Clinical Anatomy.Moore K, Agur A, York, PA 17405; Williams & Wilkins Co, 1996, paperback, 510 pages, illus, $41. Essential Clinical Anatomy is a concise, well-written, well-illustrated, clinically oriented textbook using a regional approach to the study of human anatomy Human anatomy is primarily the scientific study of the morphology of the adult human body.[1] It is subdivided into gross anatomy and microscopic anatomy.[1] . For each region of the body, there is an illustrated description of the normal structure. Scattered among these descriptions are highlighted sections on surface anatomy surface anatomy n. The study of the configuration of the surface of the body, especially in relation to its internal parts. surface anatomy 1. Anatomic structures that can be identified on the outside of the body 2. and clinical correlations, and tables summarize separately the muscles, nerves, major arteries, and joints of that region. The tables of muscles include the origin, insertion, innervation innervation /in·ner·va·tion/ (in?er-va´shun) 1. the distribution or supply of nerves to a part. 2. the supply of nervous energy or of nerve stimulation sent to a part. and action of each muscle in the region, and the tables of nerves and arteries summarize the origin and course of the nerves and arteries in the region. Examples of diagnostic imaging techniques (eg, magnetic resonance imaging magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), noninvasive diagnostic technique that uses nuclear magnetic resonance to produce cross-sectional images of organs and other internal body structures. ) are present throughout the book and supplement artists' illustrations, many of which are from the senior author's Clinically Oriented Anatomy or from Ms Agur's Grant's Atlas of Anatomy. Illustrations of cross-sectional anatomy are helpful in studying the relationships of structures in a region. Some of these illustrations accompany diagnostic images, helping the reader to understand the spatial relationships of the indicated structures. As a teaching aid, this book could be used for assignments to be read prior to the corresponding lectures, giving the student an overview; as a quick reference text in courses in which students are tested primarily on material presented in lectures; or as a review text to help a reader overwhelmed with anatomic details regain the big picture. In a clinical setting, the physical therapist who is treating patients and wants a quick review of clinical anatomy will find that the illustrations and summary tables alone make this book a worthwhile addition to a professional library. The therapist who has more detailed questions on the anatomy of a region or of individual structures may have to look to one of the more comprehensive anatomy books to find the information.
