Ericsson wins $40 million contract in Hong Kong for digital cellular network.


STOCKHOLM, Sweden--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 23, 1996--Ericsson has signed an order for a DCS (1) See also DSC.

The order includes delivery and installation of switching and radio base station equipment. The contract is valued at approximately $40 million.

The DCS 1800 system is to provide a cellular network with full coverage for Hong Kong, covering the central area in the initial step, and to subsequently be expanded to the entire Hong Kong Territory.

PTC is one of six operators who were awarded a license in July 1996 for a PCS (1) (Personal Communications Services) Refers to wireless services that emerged after the U.S. government auctioned commercial licenses in 1994 and 1995. This radio spectrum in the 1.  network in Hong Kong. PTC is a consortium between China Resources, Unisource Mobile, Telepaging and Mobile Systems International.

The DCS 1800 network, based upon the global GSM standard, was selected at an early stage in the process. The system will be implemented during the autumn of 1996, and it will be in service in January 1997.

Ericsson has now supplied GSM systems to 47 countries and is the leading supplier of GSM equipment worldwide.
