Ericsson system developments to boost voice quality, increase capacity in TDMA IS-136 networks.SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 3, 1997--Ericsson unveiled today a package of products and features for the TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) A satellite and cellular phone technology that interleaves multiple digital signals onto a single high-speed channel. For cellular, TDMA triples the capacity of the original analog method (FDMA). IS-136 wireless system that will improve voice quality and capacity and enable dual-band, dual-mode communication in high-capacity networks. The announcement came at Wireless '97, sponsored by the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association See TIA. (body, standard) Telecommunications Industry Association - (TIA) An association that sets standards for communications cabling. Cables that TIA set standards for include: EIA/TIA-568A and EIA/TIA-568B category three, four and five cable. . The latest enhancements include radio and networking developments, as well as new and enhanced capabilities in the Ericsson Mobile Switching Center (MSC) platform that is used in all Ericsson TDMA IS-136 wireless networks. These latest products and features boost the capacity of a TDMA IS-136 network to between five and seven times the capacity of an AMPS network. A dual-band, dual-mode environment can be created, bringing together analog and digital networks at 800 MHz and 1900 MHz frequency bands to provide seamless access to a wide range of services via a single phone. "These new developments show TDMA IS-136 is a robust digital technology that can compete on the world market," said Goran Froling, vice president, D-AMPS/AMPS Business Unit, U.S., Wireless Communications Division, Ericsson Inc. "Our newest products and features will enable dual-band, dual-mode communication in high-capacity networks." Worldwide deliveries of Ericsson TDMA IS-136 wireless networks with these new functions and features will start in the last quarter of 1997. Existing TDMA IS-136/AMPS wireless networks can also be upgraded to this latest specification. Three of the developments in the latest release will boost voice quality in TDMA IS-136: -- New ACELP ACELP Algebraic Code-Excited Linear Prediction ACELP Association Canadienne des Ecoles de Langues Privées ACELP Adaptive Code Excited Linear Prediction ACELP Algebraic Code Excited Linear Predictive vocoder (VOice CODER) Same as speech codec. (communications) vocoder - Hardware or software which implements a compression algorithm particular to voice. This dual-band, full-rate vocoder is designed for use with both 800 MHz and 1900 MHz systems. It uses Algebraic Code Excited Linear Predictive Coding Linear predictive coding (LPC) is a tool used mostly in audio signal processing and speech processing for representing the spectral envelope of a digital signal of speech in compressed form, using the information of a linear predictive model. (ACELP) technology as specified in the IS-136 standard. ACELP improves intrinsic voice quality and also provides an added safety margin for situations where a user is on the coverage edge of a cell or in a noisy environment. -- Adaptive Channel Allocation (ACA ACA - Application Control Architecture ) Adaptive Channel Allocation (ACA) contains a tool for identifying those radio cells in a wireless network where radio interference is a problem and automatically re-tunes them to achieve a significant improvement in voice quality. It also manages channel selection so low-quality radio channels in a particular cell are automatically avoided. ACA also improves network capacity. -- Interference Rejection Combining (IRC (Internet Relay Chat) Computer conferencing on the Internet. There are hundreds of IRC channels on numerous subjects that are hosted on IRC servers around the world. After joining a channel, your messages are broadcast to everyone listening to that channel. ) Interference Rejection Combining is an adaptive antenna technique that reduces radio interference in the first phase on the uplink from a mobile phone to the base station antenna. IRC uses a virtual beamforming technique to selectively "focus" the receiver onto the desired signal and reject the interfering signal.
