Ericsson signs major contracts with Celcom, Malaysia.STOCKHOLM, Sweden--(BUSINESS WIRE)--January 22, 1997--Ericsson has been awarded several major contracts by Cellular Communications Network (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (Celcom) to expand and enhance services and performance of their GSM and ETACS ETACS Extended Total Access Communications System ETACS Electronic Time and Alarm Control System ETACS Extended Total Access Communication System ETACS Electronic Total Automobile Control System networks. In the last 18 months, Celcom has awarded Ericsson orders exceeding $135 million from which more than $84 million were signed in the last months of 1996. This is in keeping with Celcom's vision to become the total telecommunications provider to the nation. As part of Celcom's expansion program, its GSM network will be expanded with an additional 162 radio base stations. Switching capacity will be doubled to cater for the future growth in the number of subscribers. Enhanced services such as data transmission and Short Message Service (SMS (1) (Storage Management System) Software used to routinely back up and archive files. See HSM. Ericsson will also provide technical training of its systems. Celcom's GSM expansion program is scheduled to be completed in the last quarter of 1997. The GSM network will then be at par, in terms of area of coverage, with the ETACS (ART 900) network. Ericsson is fully supportive of Celcom's initiative in providing telecommunication services to township development projects. For example, the Bukit Merah Lake Township, a turnkey project for Ericsson, is Celcom's first fully operational fixed-line service. The township will use fiber optic technology, offering its residents the latest in Internet and multimedia technology. Currently, Ericsson and Celcom are carrying out a DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) A cordless phone standard mostly used in Europe; however, DECT 6.0 is increasingly used worldwide. The DRA 1900 (Digital Radio Access) is a Radio in the Local Loop system developed by Ericsson, based on the DECT (Digital European Cordless Telephony) standard. This system uses radio waves, instead of wire, for the access part of the fixed network. From this trial system, Ericsson hopes that a greater understanding of the latest technology in wireless communications will facilitate the development of telecommunications in the nation.
