Ericsson signs contract for GSM System with JT Mobiles in India.


STOCKHOLM, Sweden--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 9, 1996--Ericsson has signed a contract with JT Mobiles for the supply of a digital cellular Global System for Mobile Communications (communications) Global System for Mobile Communications - (GSM, originally "Groupe de travail Sp?ciale pour les services Mobiles") One of the major standards for digital cellular communications, in use in over 60 countries and serving over one billion subscribers.  (GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) A digital cellular phone technology based on TDMA that is the predominant system in Europe, but also used worldwide. Developed in the 1980s, GSM was first deployed in seven European countries in 1992. ) system. The contract contains supply and installation of complete GSM systems for JT Mobiles cellular operations in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh Andhra Pradesh (än`drə prä`dāsh), state (2001 provisional pop. 75,727,541), 106,052 sq mi (275,608 sq km), SE India, on the Bay of Bengal. The capital is Hyderabad. . The contract runs over a three year period and covers JT Mobiles' need of equipment for establishing mobile phone services covering the entire two States.

Ericsson is already the leading supplier of cellular technology to India, where there are three Ericsson GSM networks in operation and four on order. Throughout the world, Ericsson has implemented GSM networks in 43 countries holding a 50% share of the world GSM system market.

JT Mobiles Ltd., has been formed by a consortium comprising of Telia of Sweden, Jasmine ToT of Thailand and three leading Indian Business houses. The company is expected to commence trial operations in early September, 1996.
