Ericsson signs $30 million GSM frame agreement with Westel 900 and introduces micro radio base stations in Hungary.


STOCKHOLM Stockholm (stŏk`hôlm'), city (1995 pop. 692,954), capital of Sweden and of Stockholm co., E Sweden, situated where Lake Mälaren flows into the Baltic Sea. , Sweden--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 12, 1997--Ericsson has signed a frame agreement with Westel 900 for expansion of their GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) A digital cellular phone technology based on TDMA that is the predominant system in Europe, but also used worldwide. Developed in the 1980s, GSM was first deployed in seven European countries in 1992.  network.

The agreement includes deliveries and installation of switching and radio equipment for the whole country. This means that Ericsson will remain Westel 900's sole supplier for GSM equipment. Deliveries are scheduled from February 1997. The order is valued at approximately $30 million.

Westel 900 is the leading Hungarian GSM Operator. Its network already covers more than 90 percent of Hungary and over 95 percent of its population. By introducing micro radio base stations in Hungary, Westel 900 will be the very first operator in central and eastern Europe The term "Central and Eastern Europe" came into wide spread use, replacing "Eastern bloc", to describe former Communist countries in Europe, after the collapse of the Iron Curtain in 1989/90.  to use this new technology. As the units will mainly be implemented in hot spot traffic areas, Westel 900 will be able to increase system capacity and to improve network quality. By year end of 1997, the network expansion will provide 98-99 percent population coverage and inbuilding coverage will double.
