Ericsson receives first order in Chile for a D-AMPS/AMPS cellular system.


STOCKHOLM--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 4, 1995--Ericsson has signed an order for a D-AMPS/AMPS wireless cellular system with Compania de Telecomunicaciones Moviles Chile S.A. (CTCC CTCC Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee (India)

CTCC Community Treatment and Care Centre (East Belfast) 
), one of the two operators in Chile.

The Ericsson system will enable CTCC to offer the full range of digital services including Personal Communications Systems (PCS (1) (Personal Communications Services) Refers to wireless services that emerged after the U.S. government auctioned commercial licenses in 1994 and 1995.  884 base stations enabling CTCC to offer complete Wireless Intelligent Network services for digital as well as analog subscribers. The system will be in commercial service early in 1996.

The new version of D-AMPS (IS-136) incorporates a digital control channel allowing operators to easily introduce fully-digital features and services in their existing infrastructure. Examples of such features and services are sleep mode, data and fax capabilities, enhanced automatic international roaming, support for private systems and advanced mobile station support for hierarchical cell structures.

Currently, there are almost two million subscribers using D-AMPS networks and 40 million using AMPS networks worldwide, all with the potential of migrating to digital D-AMPS in the future. Ericsson's networks support over 15 million of these subscribers.
