Ericsson receives a $130 million expansion order from Malaysia.


STOCKHOLM, Sweden--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 2, 1997--Ericsson Telecommunications Sdn Bhd SDN BHD Sendirian Berhad (Malay equivalent to incorporated)  has received an order from Mutiara Telecommunications Sdn Bhd to further expand its nation-wide Personal Communications Network Personal Communications Network (PCN) is the European digital cellular mobile telephone network, developed in accordance with GSM standards.  (PCN 1. ). Valued at $130 million, the order consists of switching, radio base stations, as well as, transmission equipment. This is an addition to the $355 million order of Ericsson equipment already invested by Mutiara Telecom.

"We currently have 130,000 subscribers on the Mutiara DiGi1800 network, which makes us the largest PCN operator in Malaysia. This order will further improve the capacity of the network to accommodate 400,000 subscribers. We are committed to continuously enhance our network for the benefit of all our subscribers," said Kamaruddin Jaffar, Chairman, Mutiara Telecom.

Mutiara Telecom was the last of five operators in Malaysia to receive a license for digital telephony Digital telephony is a technology used in the provision of digital telephone services and systems. Since the 1960s it has almost entirely replaced the old telephone system that used analog telephony.  based on the GSM/PCN standard in mid 1994, and was the first to commercially launch the system. Apart from a nation-wide PCN network, Mutiara Telecom is a full service provider with services ranging from international gateway, domestic fixed line, VSAT (Very Small Aperture satellite Terminal) A small earth station for satellite transmission that handles up to 56 Kbits/sec of digital transmission. VSATs that handle the T1 data rate (up to 1.544 Mbits/sec) are called "TSATs.  to Data Network services.

Olle Ulvenholm, Managing Director of Ericsson Telecommunications Sdn Bhd, said that this order re-affirms the strong relations between Ericsson and Mutiara Telecom and the confidence in Ericsson's products and services.
