Ericsson Signs Corporate Agreement with ACE Associated Compiler Experts; Company Adopts CoSy for DSP-C Compiler Applications in Mobile Telephony.

ACE Associated Compiler Experts today announced a corporate agreement with Ericsson of Stockholm, Sweden.

Ericsson Radio Systems, a research and development group servicing the global Ericsson organization, has selected ACE's CoSy(R)-DSP compiler development platform to generate compilers for the embedded Inserted into. See embedded system.  multi-processor DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). It provides ultra-fast instruction sequences, such as shift and add, and multiply and add, which are commonly used in math-intensive  systems in its advanced mobile telephony equipment. Ericsson has been using CoSy for internal development during the past year. This corporate adoption is the result of Ericsson's successful use of the tool.

Ericsson Radio Systems develops in-house cores that are specifically optimized for DSP intensive mobile telephony applications such as cellular radio basestations. As many as ten of these cores are integrated into a single ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) Pronounced "a-sick." A chip that is custom designed for a specific application rather than a general-purpose chip such as a microprocessor.  to handle multiple radio channels, with all the cores sharing common program and data memories.

A prime objective of compiler development for these DSPs was the need to reduce assembly language programming to an absolute minimum in order to minimize software development times and maximize IP reuse. As a result, Ericsson required a compiler development platform that was not only oriented towards the needs of DSP, but also one that could generate highly efficient optimising compilers (programming, tool) optimising compiler - compiler which attempts to analyse the code it produces and to produce more efficient code by performing program transformation such as branch elimination, partial evaluation, or peep-hole optimisation.

"We chose CoSy-DSP because it looked like a very powerful yet easy to use compiler development system," said Gosta Lemne, vice president responsible for access technology at Corporate Function Technology. "Over the past year this opinion has been confirmed by the fact that we have already developed two C compilers for our in-house DSP cores in a surprisingly short timeframe, with both compilers exploiting ACE's innovative DSP-C language extensions," he added.

of ACE Associated Computer Experts, Amsterdam, The Netherlands) is a world leader in the production of compiler development tools for professional compiler developers. Its open CoSy compiler development platform gives compiler developers the ability to achieve a similar leading edge position in the construction of better and faster optimising compilers for architectures ranging from 4-bit DSPs to 256-bit VLIW (Very Long Instruction Word) A CPU architecture that reads a group of instructions and executes them at the same time. For example, the group (word) might contain four instructions, and the compiler ensures that those four instructions are not dependent on each  processors.
