Ericsson Racing Team Names British Yachtsman Neal McDonald As Skipper.

It's named after its sponsor, Volvo. Though the route is changed to accommodate various ports of call, the race typically departs England in September.  2005-06.

Neal McDonald is a veteran of four round-the-world races, finishing second as skipper in his last race, and has competed in both the America's Cup America's Cup: see sailing.
America's Cup

Most prestigious trophy in international yachting competition. First offered under another name in Britain in 1851, the cup was won easily by the America from New York and subsequently became known as the

It was started in 1957 and is normally a biennial event (occurring in odd-numbered years). However, the event was not staged in 2001 or 2005.
. McDonald has the experience and talent to skipper any boat competitively. He also has an engineering background.

Steve Hayles, also a veteran of the Volvo Ocean Race, will join McDonald on the Ericsson Racing Team. Hayles has participated in the Volvo Ocean Race three times and was a navigator in the 2001-02 race.

Dave Powys is taking on the important shore manager position. Powys has vast experience in boat management and sailed in the Whitbread Round the World Race maxi yachts The word maxi can either refer to a large racing sailboat of typically more than 21 metres or to a well known range of smaller production cruiser/racer yachts.

There is no precise definition of how large a racing yacht must be to be termed a maxi

Ericsson, the world's leading telecommunications supplier, announced its entry in the race on April 25. The Ericsson Racing Team is supported by Semcon as design and development partner.
