The ESP-2 MI is a compact, 2-port serial hub that provides versatile support of multi-interface protocols for industrial/manufacturing environments and commercial applications, including hospitality, medical and security access control operations. Through direct connection with the ESP-2 MI, serial peripherals without LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area.  connectivity, advanced management diagnostics, simplified installation, unique RS-232/485 configuration modes, dual power inputs and DIN Rail mounting options. Equinox will be demonstrating its new ESP-2 MI serial hub at LinuxWorld Jan. 22-24 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, New York City New York City: see New York, city.

"The ESP-2 MI is a compact solution for businesses that have distributed serial peripheral connectivity running a host of network applications - these can include automated data collection and shop floor control environments," said Mitch Friend, vice president of Equinox Sales. "In designing this hub, we focused on ease of use, performance and flexibility, meeting the needs of the person who will use the device every day and the system administrator who is responsible for initial set-up and ongoing maintenance."

The ESP-2 MI simplifies serial peripheral access by providing LAN connectivity for two serial devices via standard DB9 ports that can accommodate RS-232, RS-422 or RS-485 connections. In addition, it has full support for multi-drop applications in RS-485 mode. With options for desktop, wall, cabinet or standard DIN rail mounting, the compact ESP-2 MI is flexible enough to install anywhere on the network with ease, and without clutter, via its standard 10Base-T port.

The ESP-2 MI has 32MB of SDRAM (Synchronous DRAM) A type of dynamic RAM (DRAM) memory chip that has been widely used since the late 1990s. SDRAM chips eliminated wait states by dividing the chip into two cell blocks and interleaving data between them.  and 4MB of flash to make devices respond with direct-connect speed, and its superior management tools, compact design and economy mean that as the network grows, it is easy to open more ports or add other serial devices wherever and whenever they are needed.

ESP-2 MI supports all the major operating systems, including Windows .NET/2000/XP/NT(4.0) and UNIX UNIX

Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics).
(SCO (The SCO Group, Lindon, UT, www.sco.com) A leading vendor of Unix operating systems for the x86 platform. SCO had also offered Linux, but abandoned the line in the spring of 2003. The SCO Group is the combination of two companies: Utah-based Caldera, Inc. , OpenServer/Unixware, Linux, AIX 4.3/5.1), making it a good fit for any networked environment with shared serial peripherals. The ESP-2 MI includes port management tools that facilitate mode selection for each port, and even allow system managers to `hide' unused ports from the network. Features like dual power inputs and the EquiView Plus software make the ESP-2 MI easy to set-up, manage and maintain on the network.
