EqualLogic Employs Seagate Enterprise SATA Technology to Power New High-Capacity PS400E Storage Array; As the First iSCSI SAN Vendor to Use Seagate's 750 Gigabyte Barracuda ES Hard Disks, EqualLogic Raises the Bar for Midrange Enterprise Storage.

NASHUA, N.H. -- EqualLogic(R), the leading provider of enterprise-class iSCSI storage area network (SAN) solutions, today introduced its new PS400E, the first iSCSI storage array to employ the 750 gigabyte One billion bytes. Also GB, Gbyte and G-byte. See giga and space/time.

(unit) gigabyte - 2^30 = 1,073,741,824 bytes = 1024 megabytes.

Roughly the amount of data required to encode a human gene sequence (including all the redundant codons).

The original Parallel ATA (PATA) interface was launched in 1986.  disks from Seagate, the worldwide leader in hard drives. The PS400E is a high-capacity enterprise performance system designed to meet the mounting storage requirements of today's medium to large businesses. EqualLogic also announced the release of Version 3.0 of its firmware A category of memory chips that hold their content without electrical power. Firmware includes flash, ROM, PROM, EPROM and EEPROM technologies. When holding program instructions, firmware can be thought of as "hard software." See flash memory, ROM, PROM, EPROM, EEPROM and FOTA. , which delivers greater customer choice and control by enabling multiple pools of storage in a single SAN (see separate press release, "EqualLogic Announces New Software Platform for PS Series SANs").

The EqualLogic PS400E storage array houses 14 Barracuda ES 750 gigabyte drives within a 3U enclosure for 10.5 terabytes of raw storage capacity. The PS400E delivers best-in-class performance while providing both primary and secondary storage for database, e-mail, print, file and Web service applications. The PS400E comes with advanced data management services built into its firmware, providing a full range of performance optimization, automated management and data protection capabilities. At a U.S. list price of $66,000 for 10.5 terabytes of data storage including storage management capabilities, the PS400E offers the lowest cost per terabyte One trillion bytes. Also TB, Tbyte and T-byte. See tera and space/time.

while IT budgets remain the same. Due to this trend, today's IT managers need high-capacity storage solutions that can manage themselves without compromising reliability and performance," said John Joseph, vice president of marketing at EqualLogic. "With the help of Seagate's leading-edge line of enterprise SATA hard drives, the PS400E storage array addresses this need head on. EqualLogic now offers a wide range of storage capacity in the most reliable enterprise-class iSCSI-based family of storage arrays available."

Seagate's Barracuda ES is a new family of high-capacity enterprise drives that utilizes perpendicular recording A method of digital recording on a magnetic disk in which the bits are in a vertical arrangement instead of horizontal in order to take up less space. Also called "vertical recording," perpendicular recording is expected to materialize with areal densities exceeding 200 gigabits per  technology to deliver 50 percent more storage capacity than other drives of the same class. Leveraging unparalleled Seagate enterprise expertise and technology, Barracuda ES drives boast the highest reliability of any 7,200 rpm drives in the industry and are purpose-built for 24x7 business-critical applications. Barracuda ES maximizes system availability and performance with enterprise multidrive firmware features, including Error Recovery Control, Workload Management and best-in-class rotational vibration (RV) tolerance. Barracuda ES is available in 750, 500, 400 and 250 gigabyte capacities; SATA 3Gb/s interface; and 8- or 16-Mbyte multisegmented cache.

"Companies today are looking to accommodate growing data capacity demands by business-critical systems that include rich media content, reference and compliance data, as well as data protection schemes such as disk-to-disk, virtual tape, snapshots and virtualization An umbrella term for enhancing a computer's ability to do work. Following are the ways virtualization is used.
