The children will be using the same EPSON Stylus(R) Color ink jet printer technology that will accompany the STS-95 crew on the Space Shuttle Discovery on Oct. 29, 1998.

This nationwide tour "launches" today in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  and will continue on to Phoenix, Dallas, Houston, Indianapolis, Chicago, Columbus, Pittsburgh, New York New York, state, United States

For each of the thirteen schools that participate in this tour, Epson will donate five EPSON Stylus Color ink jet printers and one EPSON digital camera.

"We recognize the importance of technology in the classroom and are pleased to donate our award-winning color imaging products to these schools," said Dan Crane, vice president of marketing, Epson. "We're excited to be working with these children to create well wishes for the crew as they prepare to embark on Mission STS-95."

EPSON Stylus Ink Jet Printer in Space

The Epson printer will be used during the nine-day mission to print scientific reports and documents, photographs of parts in need of repair, and perhaps digital pictures of the astronauts' families at home sent via email.

Previously, shuttle missions had used thermal transfer print technology during space flights, which had limited photo reproduction capabilities and consumed too much energy. Improved printing technology was evaluated to meet the specific needs for space travel. After this review and mission critical testing, Epson's proprietary Micro Piezo "Piezo", derived from the Greek piezein, which means to squeeze or press, is a prefix used in:
  • Piezoelectricity
  • Piezometer
  • Piezo ignition
  • Piezoelectric sensor
  • Piezoelectric loudspeakers
ink jet print technology was accepted for this program.

"We are extremely honored to have Epson's proprietary Micro Piezo ink jet technology on Mission STS-95," said Jay Shears, director of marketing, printer products, Epson. "It has been a privilege to combine the expertise of our Epson engineers with those involved in the Space Shuttle Discovery program for the benefit of this Shuttle Mission."

The primary objective of this flight is to conduct a variety of science experiments being carried in the pressurized pres·sur·ize

John Glenn, who thirty-six years ago became the first American to orbit the Earth, will be making his second flight aboard STS-95 in October. Glenn will be 77 years old at the time of the launch, making him the oldest human ever to travel in space. STS-95 will be the 25th flight of Space Shuttle Discovery and the 94th mission flown since the start of the Space Shuttle program in April 1981.

Curt Brown, who will be making his fifth Shuttle flight, will command the STS-95 crew. The pilot, Steve Lindsey, will be making his second flight. Scott Parazynski, Steve Robinson, Pedro Duque and Chiaki Mukai will also be members of the crew.
