BRIDGEWATER, N.J. -- Enzon Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: ENZN) today announced that the first patient has been enrolled in its clinical study of the HIF-1 alpha antagonist antagonist /an·tag·o·nist/ (an-tag´o-nist)

"We are very pleased with the rapid advancement we have made on this important project," said Jeffrey Buchalter, chairman and chief executive officer. "We are very focused on developing innovative therapeutics to treat cancer, and this well validated target is a very exciting addition to our clinical portfolio."

Enzon licensed the HIF-1 alpha antagonist from Santaris in July 2006 along with the Survivin antagonist and six additional proprietary product candidates created using the Locked Nucleic Acid A locked nucleic acid (LNA), often referred to as inaccessible RNA, is a modified RNA nucleotide. The ribose moiety of an LNA nucleotide is modified with an extra bridge connecting the 2' and 4' carbons.  technology platform, all directed against novel cancer targets selected by Enzon.
