Enzo Biochem Reports Fiscal 2006 First Quarter Operating Results.FARMINGDALE, N.Y. -- Enzo Biochem, Inc. (NYSE NYSE See: New York Stock Exchange :ENZ), a biotechnology company specializing in gene identification and genetic and immune regulation technologies for diagnostic and therapeutic applications and providing laboratory services to the medical community, today reported operating results for the fiscal three months ended October 31, 2005. Revenues in the first quarter of fiscal 2006 were $10.2 million, compared to $10.3 million, a year ago, reflecting a $0.2 million increase in revenues at Enzo Clinical Labs and a $0.3 million decrease in revenue at Enzo Life Sciences. The net loss for the quarter totaled ($3.3) million, or ($0.10) per share, compared to net income in the comparable year-ago period of $7.0 million, or $0.21 per share. Gross profit declined from $4.9 million in the fiscal 2005 first quarter to $4.5 million in the fiscal 2006 first quarter. During the fiscal 2006 first quarter, the Company incurred legal expenses totaling $1.9 million, compared to $1.1 million a year ago. Legal expense increased as a result of higher expenses surrounding patent litigation and added patent costs associated with continued development of the Company's intellectual property.
