Environmentalists claim Weyerhaeuser and Plum Creek violate SFI rules.Two environmentalist groups have separately asked the Sustainable Forestry Board to revoke Sustainable Forestry Initiative The Sustainable Forestry Initiative is a program to certify forests to insure they are being managed in a sustainable manner. SFI was started in 1994 by members of the American Forest and Paper Association. certificates held by Plum Creek Timber Plum Creek Timber (NYSE: PCL) is the largest private landowner in the United States. Most of its lands were originally purchased as timberland.[1] Headquartered in Seattle, Washington, Plum Creek was spun off from Burlington Resources as a master limited and Weyerhaeuser, according to The Washington Post. Plum Greek's forestry practices have been challenged by the Natural Resources Council of Maine. The organization reportedly contends that Plum Creek has violated rules, including excessive cutting of timber without filing proper plans and failing to notify the state of Maine about dear-cuts at forests Plum Creek owns. The Seattle Audubon Society says Weyerhaeuser cut trees in forests that are home to northern spotted owls, which are protected by the Endangered Species Act The federal Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA) (16 U.S.C.A. §§ 1531 et seq.) was enacted to protect animal and plant species from extinction by preserving the ecosystems in which they survive and by providing programs for their conservation. . Representatives for Plum Creek and Weyerhaeuser each told the Post that their companies are practicing sustainable forestry in line with their SFI SFI Sustainable Forestry Initiative (forest certification program of AF&PA) SFI Santa Fe Institute (scientific research in Santa Fe, New Mexico) SFI Science Foundation Ireland SFI Six Figure Income certifications. |
