Environmental suit.
Environmental Suit: The state of California sued the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency for denying its first-in-the-nation
greenhouse gas limits proposals on cars, trucks and SUVs. The suit
challenges the Bush administration's conclusion that states have no
business setting emission standards. Other states are also expected to
join the lawsuit, which was anticipated after the EPA denied
California's request for a waiver Dec. 19 and at least 16 other
states are expected to follow California's lead in trying to adopt
tougher emission limits. Federal regulators said that the federal
government was moving forward with a national solution. Energy
legislation already signed by the President will raise fuel economy
standards nationwide to an average of 35 miles per gallon by 2020.
California wants the auto industry to cut emissions by one-third in new
vehicles by 2016 or reach an average of 36.8 mpg.
