Environmental firms.Ranked by number of L.A. County employees EXECUTIVE SUMMARY ENVIRONMENTAL firms continue to struggle, and those in Los Angeles County have mirrored the nationwide slowdown that followed the boom years of the 1970s through 1990s. Employment at the largest environmental firms in Los Angeles County has been squeezed, with the 15 largest firms reporting a 6 percent decrease in environmental staff from the year earlier. Companies have been hit by tighter government budgets and cutbacks in the private sector. Nationwide, the core environmental services sector, is expected to contract through 2010, according to projections by the Environmental Business Journal. Conversely, the water and waste segment, which includes solid waste management, wastewater treatment works, and water utilities. THE TRENDS Piling Up Waste Management Inc.'s stock price has gained more than 20 percent in the last year. [GRAPHIC OMITTED] More to Toss Waste processing expenditures have grown as share of overall market. [GRAPHIC OMITTED] THE PACESETTER WASTE MANAGEMENT INC. WITH four times as many employees as second place MWH Global Inc., Waste Management Inc. once again claims the title of largest environmental firm in Los Angeles County. Despite its size, the company has felt the effects of the slowdown in the environmental industry, shedding 36 local employees over the past year. Companywide, Waste Management has cut its payroll by 1,300. The Houston-based company operates 14 sites in L.A. County, providing solid waste collection and disposal, hazardous waste disposal, recycling and electrical power generation from waste materials. Among its county landfills, the controversy surrounding the Bradley Landfill in Sun Valley continues. With Bradley reaching capacity sooner than expected, Waste Management has proposed building a recycling and transfer station adjacent to the site. Various groups oppose the plan, including the East Valley Coalition, a group of residents and activists in Sun Valley. Waste Management Inc. reported net income of $152 million for the first quarter ended March 31, up from $61 million for the like period a year earlier. First quarter revenues were $2.9 billion, versus $2.7 billion in the first quarter of 2003.
