THE PACESETTER

WASTE MANAGEMENT OF LOS ANGELES Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  

Operator of the Bradley Landfill and Recycling Center in Sun Valley, Waste Management of Los Angeles performs such services as solid waste handling, disposal, recycling and pollution control.

While the Bradley Landfill is permitted to operate through 2007, it will reach capacity in 2003 at the current rate of waste acceptance. The landfill takes in more than 8,500 tons a day for household and commercial solid-waste disposal. The gas recovery plant at the Bradley Landfill and Recycling Center generates enough electricity to serve the needs of almost 1,500 homes each day.

As one of L.A.'s waste recycling contractors, Waste Management processes up to 800 tons of residential green waste and yard trimmings each day and transports material to San Joaquin San Joaquin (săn wäkēn`), river, c.320 mi (510 km) long, rising in the Sierra Nevada, E Calif., and flowing W then N through the S Central Valley to form a large delta with the Sacramento River near Suisun Bay, an arm of San Francisco Bay.  for composting

In 1998, Houston-based Waste Management Inc. merged with USA Waste Services. The combination of these two companies created a vast network of facilities, including more than 300 landfills, 650 collection operations, 325 transfer stations, 150 recycling facilities and 16 waste-to-energy plants in North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere. . Waste Management not only has the largest number of disposal facilities in the industry, but the greatest capacity, with an average remaining permitted life of more than 25 years per site.
