U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Chooses SitePro Software

to Expedite Wetlands Restoration

Environmental Software, developer of SitePro and other environmental management software products, in conjunction with CH2M HILL CH2M HILL is a global provider of engineering, construction, and operations services for corporations, nonprofits, and federal, state, and local governments with regional offices worldwide. , a leading environmental consulting Environmental consulting is often a form of compliance consulting, in which the consultant ensures that the client maintains an appropriate measure of compliance with environmental regulations.  firm, has been chosen by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS USFWS United States Fish and Wildlife Service ) to perform the Confirmatory Sampling Program (CSP (1) (Certified Systems Professional) An earlier award for successful completion of an ICCP examination in systems development. The 880-acre parcel of coastal wetlands and endangered-species habitat in Huntington Beach is one of the largest wetlands restoration projects in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, , with a projected total budget of $91 million. The project team will use SitePro to analyze and assess enviro-relational data, as well as to perform mapping, reporting and graphing of the site.

``The restoration of the Bolsa Chica Wetlands is a complex undertaking that will require years to complete,'' said Mickey Rivera, environmental contaminants specialist, USFWS. ``The cornerstone of every successful wetlands restoration is a thorough understanding of the existing chemical, biological and hydrogeological conditions at the site.

``Building that necessary understanding of the complex Bolsa Chica site will require a multidisciplined team of engineers and scientists equipped with advanced technology and tools,'' Rivera continued.

``We chose CH2M HILL's team and Environmental Software's products for data management because the skills, experience and technologies presented by these companies gave us the best combination of resources to get the job done.''

The ERA and CSP are the first steps toward restoring the ecologically sensitive area located directly north of the Bolsa Chica State Beach Bolsa Chica State Beach is a public beach managed by the California Department of Parks and Recreation. It is located in Orange County, city of Huntington Beach.

 in Huntington Beach.

The primary goals of the project are to determine how historical existing site conditions impact current and future species inhabiting the wetlands and to identify exactly what cleanup levels are necessary to support planned wildlife habitats and human recreational activities as outlined in the restoration plan.

The wetlands have a centurylong history of degradation and contamination stemming from agricultural, recreational, oilfield and urban development. More than 20 years of urban runoff Runoff

and storm-water flows have been diverted onto the site.

In addition, more than 430 operational and abandoned oil wells exist in the wetlands, with networks of active, inactive and abandoned pipelines still spanning the area.

The project team will use SitePro to give environmental engineers and consultants easy access to enviro-relational data management, mapping, reporting, graphing, drawing and other software tools from within a single user interface.

The resulting database integrates topography topography (təpŏg`rəfē), description or representation of the features and configuration of land surfaces. From SitePro's basemap, information and reports are instantly available to the project personnel on a PC with a few simple mouse clicks.

``The success of the Bolsa Chica restoration relies on the ability of many environmental professionals -- biologists, geologists, toxicologists, chemists and engineers -- to develop an interdisciplinary understanding of the complex conditions and processes of the site,'' Dr. Harry Ohlendorf, biologist and project manager for CH2M HILL, said.

``Once our team can view the overall data in perspective, we can evaluate the portions of the site that present risks to plants or animals as a result of chemicals and determine what the cleanup criteria should be for areas having contaminants in sediment, soil or water. SitePro will allow us to generate comprehensive, accurate reports in minutes.''

Although many consultants, agencies and companies have already performed years of sampling and analysis at the site, most of the resulting data was contained in voluminous paper reports. This is the first time all relevant data has been compiled electronically so that it can be easily viewed, analyzed and presented.

``SitePro allows the project team to capture and utilize many years' worth of valuable information concerning the site that was previously inaccessible,'' Susan Perrell, vice president of marketing, Environmental Software, said. ``This resource will allow the project team to quickly identify gaps in the data and determine which areas are critical to sample in more detail.''
