The newest addition to the company's family of open, standards-based applications programming interfaces (APIs), the EntrustIPSec Negotiator Toolkit provides Internet Security Association Key Management Protocol (ISAKMP (Internet Security Association and Key Management Protocol) A framework for establishing trusted interactions among entities using TCP/IP. ) key negotiation services and peer authentication as well as Entrust(R) key management services to IPSec applications in a corporate environment. The Toolkit eliminates the complexity and need for specialized expertise to build a scaleable public-key infrastructure for key management functions. In addition, it overcomes the biggest weakness of current Internet remote access systems: the lack of standards-based key transfer mechanisms and certificate life cycle management. Without these, firewall and other vendors are limited in the scaleability and the resulting acceptance of their products.

Developers using the EntrustIPSec Negotiator toolkit will join the long list of Entrust-Ready(TM) applications. Their customers will benefit by being able to administer security only once rather than individually for all applications.

Positive Responses

"Cisco is committed to IPSec as the emerging strategic technology for multivendor security," said Bill Kelly, director, Network Services Marketing at Cisco Systems. "IPSec will be the basis for mobility, firewalling, enterprise security and VPN (Virtual Private Network) A private network that is configured within a public network (a carrier's network or the Internet) in order to take advantage of the economies of scale and management facilities of large networks.  (Virtual Private Network) services. Entrust has been instrumental in leading the effort to provide interoperable digital certificate capabilities for IPSec."

"Raptor adheres to open industry standards wherever possible and was the first firewall vendor to ship an IPSec-compliant VPN product with the release of Eagle 4.0," said Lance Urbas, vice president of product marketing and technical services, Raptor Systems Inc. "In keeping with our commitment to standards, Raptor has chosen to partner with Entrust, the industry leader in public-key infrastructure (PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) A framework for creating a secure method for exchanging information based on public key cryptography. The foundation of a PKI is the certificate authority (CA), which issues digital certificates that authenticate the identity of ) technology, to deliver the key management and distribution element of IPSec. As part of this relationship, Raptor will be able to provide support for X.509 V3 digital certificates in our EagleMobile product for secure remote access. Along with support for Entrust's X.500 Directory Services, this will enhance the ease of use and administration of EagleMobile as the number of units deployed climbs into the tens of thousands."

"Check Point Software's support for ISAKMP and other emerging standards within the IPSec working group is a critical component of our OPSEC (OPerations SECurity) The U.S. military term for concealing critical information as part of a counterintelligence plan. A form of "security by obscurity," OPSEC determines what information adversaries can obtain or piece together from observation and to provide measures for  (Open Platform for Secure Enterprise Connectivity) enterprise security management framework," stated Asheem Chandna, vice president of business development, Check Point Software Technologies, Inc. "We applaud Entrust's efforts to deliver standards-based interoperability via the EntrustIPSec Negotiator ToolKit to enable our mutual customers interoperability via the ISAKMP standard."

"Trusted Information systems is delighted to work with Entrust Technologies to meet our mutual customers' needs for standards-based scaleable IPSec encryption," said Steven B. Lipner, executive vice president of Trusted Information systems' Network Security Products Division. "The EntrustIPSec Negotiator Toolkit will allow our customers to exploit both the industry-leading security of the Gauntlet family of network security products and the security and ease of management of Entrust cryptographic infrastructure."

Pricing and Availability

Entrust Technologies' new EntrustIPSec Negotiator Toolkit is currently in alpha testing. The beta release is expected in early May, and the commercial release is expected in the third quarter of 1997. The IPSec Negotiator Toolkit will be available to development organizations for a one-time license fee plus annual maintenance fee.
