Entrust(R) Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq: ENTU) has received its fourth FIPS PUB FIPS PUB Federal Information Processing Standard Publication  (Federal Information Processing Standards (standard) Federal Information Processing Standards - (FIPS) United States Government technical standards published by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).  and Publication) 140-1 government validation for its Cryptographic Module Version 4.0. Entrust is the only software company to receive four separate FIPS (Federal Information Processing Standards) A series of publications issed by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) that specifies information security guidelines for federal government departments and agencies.  140-1 certificates of validation to date.

FIPS 140-1 validation is a standard within the U.S. and Canadian government. It is a mandatory requirement by all U.S. federal agencies for the purchase, design and implementation of cryptographic-based security systems. The Canadian Government strongly recommends that cryptographic products used within its federal departments be FIPS 140-1 validated.

"It doesn't matter how strong an encryption product is in principle if it is not deployed correctly. FIPS 140-1 provides the assurance we need than an encryption product provides the fullest protection possible for us at the Department of Commerce and for our customers," said Keren Cummins, Director of NTIS' FedWorld(R) Information Technologies.

Entrust was the first corporation to receive validation for a computer security software product in 1995 when the Entrust Cryptographic Module Version 1.9 (Entrust/PKI(TM) 1.0) received the first ever FIPS 140-1 validation certificate. Subsequently, Entrust Cryptographic Module Version 2.4 (Entrust/PKI(TM) 2.0) was granted certificate no. 3 on Sept. 17, 1996, followed by Version 3.1 validation for Entrust/PKI(TM) 3.0 on May 11, 1998 (certificate no. 18) and Version 4.0 validation for Entrust/PKI(TM) Release 4.0 on July 30, 1998 (certificate no. 20).

The Entrust Cryptographic Module Version 4.0 is the static library which implements all of the cryptographic algorithms, such as DES and CAST, within Entrust/PKI(TM) Release 4.0 - the newest version of Entrust's public-key infrastructure software solution.

"FIPS 140-1 provides an independent, formal third party testing process which is an essential element of quality assurance when building security solutions," said Brian O'Higgins, executive vice-president and chief technology officer, Entrust Technologies. "The continued validation of Entrust certifies that an autonomous third party has examined our product's cryptography in detail and determined that it complies with strict security requirements. We are firmly committed to having each major version of our software validated through the FIPS 140-1 certification process."

"We are very pleased that Entrust has committed to the NIST Cryptographic Module Validation Program The Cryptographic Module Validation Program (CMVP) is a joint American and Canadian security accreditation program for cryptographic modules. The program is available to any vendors who seek to have their products certified for use by the U.S. .
