Entries out of the Stax alignment: Part 2: Bump, Scissors, & Step-Out.The Stax Set is an outstanding offensive alignment with multiple entries on the strengths and weaknesses of the players at both ends of the court. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] The accompanying series of continuities is designed to show the versatility, deceptfulness, and the power of the Stax Set. Part 1, published in December December: see month. (2004), expounded the background and philosophy of the Stax Set plus a review of the three beginning entries: Pass, Roll, and Back. Part 2 delineates the next three entries: Bump, an inside-oriented entry that can be run on either side of the court--making it more unpredictable and thus more of an offensive threat. Diag. 1 illustrates the Stax alignment and the beginning action of the Bump play. When 1 approaches the top of the key area, he ignites an explosion of movement from the players without the basketball. 5 pin-screens at the elbow very near; at hand. The flow of the play will keep X4 occupied with 4 and no expectation of defensive help. Diag. 5, Bump (concluded): The action starts with the ball in the hand of the best passer (1) at the left wing and the two best post players (and 5) at the two low post positions. 3 is at the top of the key and 2 at the weak-side wing. If 1 cannot hit 4 inside, he can reverse the ball to 3. This will initiate the second spin-screen action of 5 screening for 4 and 3, with the ball centered up at the top. The offense is now in a 2-in and 3-out set-up with several continuities to choose from. Diag. 6, Scissors scissors Cutting instrument or tool consisting of a pair of opposed metal blades that meet and cut when the handles at their ends are brought together. Modern scissors are of two types: the more usual pivoted blades have a rivet or screw connection between the cutting ends : The Stax alignment and the beginning of the Scissors entry. The entry is actually more of an inside-oriented attack for either 1 or 5 because of the shuffle cuts that both can make off 4 on the free-throw line. When 1 approaches the top of the key area, he must go to a spot normally occupied by the right guard. As this is happening, 5 and 4 are setting up pin-screens for 3 and 2, both of whom cut over the 3-point line to the free-throw line extended. At this point in time, the five offensive players are in a shallow 4-1 alignment. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Diag. 7: 1 has several options. He can pass the ball inside to 4 (to let 4 work on X4), pass to the wing (2), or reverse the ball to 5, as shown. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] 5 can swing the ball to the wing (3). The wing pass from 1 to 2 or from 5 to 3 will initiate a shuffle-cut action off 4 by 1 and 5. If the wing with the ball (3) cannot hit 1, he may look for the lob pass to 5 or a pass to 4 stepping out to the top of the key. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Diag. 8, Scissors (concluded): The reverse pass from 3 to 4 will trigger the screens by the two wings (3 and 2) on the block players (1 and 5). [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Diag. 9, Step-Out: The entry starts out exactly the same as the Scissors, but the fact that it can be utilized on either side of the court makes it an even more effective play in the Stax package. If X4 plays behind 4, he will make it even easier for 4 to receive the ball from 1 and attack his defender one on one. The next biggest defender (X5) should be drawn farther away to avoid having his sag in the lane and help out whenever 5 steps out behind the 3-point line. During the point guard's dribble to the right, all four of the other players will break to their respective spots. 5, after pin-screening, will step out behind the 3-point line to a spot opposite of where 1 killed his dribble. 3 will break straight out to the foul-line extended. As 1 approaches the top of the key, 4 will pin-screen 2 and then duck into an isolated spot on the dotted circle, looking for Looking for In the context of general equities, this describing a buy interest in which a dealer is asked to offer stock, often involving a capital commitment. At this point in time, four offensive players will be in a wide offensive alignment on the perimeter with 4 isolated in the center of the lane. This offensive movement should provide the defense with only minimal support for X4, who is trying to defend 4 in the center of a very high percentage shot area. Diag. 10, Step Out to Right: 1 can pass the ball to the ballside wing (2) or reverse it to (5), (as will be shown in Diag. 11.) This wing pass will initiate a staggered screen by the two players in the guard positions (1 and 5). It will allow a 2-man game in the lane. 3 can cut over the staggered screen and look for the pass from 2.2 can also look for a lay-up pass to 4. If no shot develops from this offensive action, the offense can still stay alive. They are already in the proper spot-ups to continue its possession of the basketball and its attack on the defense. Diag. 11, Step Out to Left: Instead of passing the ball to the right, 1 reverses the ball to 5, then V cuts to his right to set up the cut from 2 at the wing. 5, after passing to 3, performs the same kind of cut to the right--setting up the stagger screen for 2, cutting across from his wing position. 4's cut towards the low post puts him in perfect position for the lay-up pass from 3. Now check the two step-out plays in Diags. 10 and 11: Everything is exactly the same, but with one play going right and the other left. By John Kimble Kimble can stand for:
