Enterprise Software Packaged with Netra j Puts Java Technology to Work.


MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 29, 1996--Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced its intent to package the demo software solutions of leading vendors Applix, Corel and Oracle as part of Sun's Netra j server offering. In addition, OpenConnect Systems software will be packaged with all Netra j servers to ship commencing December 1996. In keeping with the Netra j server's commitment to deliver Java Computing solutions to end users, these are the first of many applications Sun intends to integrate with the Netra j server family's existing hardware/software package.

The combination of Sun's reliable, scalable and secure Netra j servers, zero-administration JavaStation systems and the software from Applix, Corel, Oracle, and OpenConnect Systems will enable companies to quickly and easily set up and deploy innovative business applications. These software packages provide Netra j users with office productivity programs; connectivity solutions to legacy databases; real-time, remote connectivity; and development and administration tools.

OpenConnect Systems' OpenVista demonstration software and OC://WebConnect provide secure Java-based access to legacy SNA (Systems Network Architecture) IBM's mainframe network standards introduced in 1974. Originally a centralized architecture with a host computer controlling many terminals, enhancements, such as APPN and APPC (LU 6.  mainframe and midrange data and applications. Pricing and Availability

Non-binding letters of intent have been signed with Applix, Corel and Oracle to ship free demo editions of their respective software packages with the Netra j products (five configurations); Applix and Corel's software will commence shipping with the Netra j servers in December 1996 while Oracle's products will ship in 1997. OpenConnect Systems software is included in the price of the initial Netra j server package. Prices for the Netra j servers start at $7,695 (U.S. list); at the high end, a typical Netra j configuration costs just over $200,000 (U.S. list).
