) today announced the completion of a project to expand the capabilities of its import/export terminal at the Houston Ship Channel The Houston Ship Channel in Houston, Texas is part of the Port of Houston—one of the United States's busiest sea ports. The channel is a conduit between the continental interior and the Gulf of Mexico for both petrochemical products and Midwestern grain.  to handle incremental volumes of natural gas liquids (NGLs) and liquefied petroleum gases (LPGs). The expansion doubles the offloading capacity of the facility from 240 thousand barrels per day Barrels per day (abbreviated BPD, bbl/d, bpd, bd or b/d) is a measurement used to describe the amount of crude oil (measured in barrels) produced or consumed by an entity in one day.  (MBPD) to 480 MBPD and gives it the flexibility to simultaneously unload product from two vessels or two separate products from the same vessel. In addition, the terminal's maximum loading rate for exports has increased 14 percent from 140 MBPD to 160 MBPD.

As part of this approximately $60 million initiative, Enterprise increased the capacity on its pipelines that connect the terminal to the partnership's fractionation fractionation /frac·tion·a·tion/ (frak?shun-a´shun)

The partnership now has the capability to separate up to 300 MBPD of imported mixed and domestic butanes, as well as butanes sourced from its isomerization isomerization /isom·er·iza·tion/ (i-som?er-i-za´shun) the process whereby any isomer is converted into another isomer, usually requiring special conditions of temperature, pressure, or catalysts.  facility at Mont Belvieu.

"Enhanced capabilities at our import/export terminal along the Houston Ship Channel, combined with increased fractionation capacity at Mont Belvieu, strengthens our ability to capture a larger share of imported LPGs," said Dr. Ralph S. Cunningham, Enterprise president and CEO. "Industry sources expect the volumes of LPGs coming into the United States to more than double over the next three years. In 2006, we handled approximately 60 percent of the total waterborne LPG imports into the country. With the expansion, which gives us the ability to offload products twice as quickly, we look forward to building on our leadership position and adding value to our integrated midstream energy network by enhancing the pipeline, fractionation and storage support services we offer."

Previously, available import capacity at the terminal was substantially subscribed under long-term contracts. The incremental volumes resulting from the expansion will facilitate increased supplies of LPGs into the United States. The nominal capital costs required to expand the terminal and related assets reflect Enterprise's successful strategy of planning for future growth when designing and constructing the facilities in the mid-1990s.
