Enterprise Backup - The Next Generation HARBOR's Distributed Storage Server breaks through WAN bandwidth restrictions.

CALGARY, Alberta--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 15, 1995--New Era Systems today announces a major breakthrough in enterprise data management. The Distributed Storage Storing data in multiple computers or in computers that are geographically dispersed. This was an early term for storage that evolved into SANs and storage virtualization. See SAN and storage virtualization.  Server (DSS (1) (Digital Signature Standard) A National Security Administration standard for authenticating an electronic message. See RSA and digital signature.

(2) (Digital Satellite S
) is an intermediate server platform that resides between the HARBOR enterprise server and the client systems. This three tier implementation allows data to be stored locally, while all control information flows to a single, central point. The combination of centralized management with distributed storage eliminates the need for expensive high speed WAN links to accomplish backup, distribution and other storage management functions.

The DSS is a key building block in the HARBOR distributed architecture. Combined with HARBOR+s powerful policy management database, the DSS enables customers to establish the optimum balance between centralized and decentralized de·cen·tral·ize

forces at work in today+s enterprises. Data may now be stored locally to benefit from the higher speed of local area networks and/or remotely to meet disaster recovery requirements. Security, control and audit information is managed centrally via standard HARBOR facilities.

Says Ben Dulley, President of New Era Systems, "This is the first product to handle networks intelligently. The DSS provides the architecture for scaleable performance, allowing components to be snapped into place whenever and wherever they are needed. The benefits of centralized control 1. In air defense, the control mode whereby a higher echelon makes direct target assignments to fire units. 2. In joint air operations, placing within one commander the responsibility and authority for planning, directing, and coordinating a military operation or group/category of  and automation can finally be effectively delivered."

Data is efficiently stored on the DSS, in compressed format. Automatic space management functions ensure that unneeded storage space is reclaimed after each backup. After the backup function is completed locally, a background process can be started to migrate data to the central control point. Files can be duplexed in this way to combine high speed restore with mainframe integrity and conformance to disaster recovery plans. Upon restore, HARBOR ensures that the closest available copy of the data is always chosen. The result is fault tolerant The ability to continue non-stop when a hardware failure occurs. A fault-tolerant system is designed from the ground up for reliability by building multiples of all critical components, such as CPUs, memories, disks and power supplies into the same computer.  data availability and maximum performance.

The DSS can be inserted into any location where existing bandwidth is insufficient to provide acceptable performance. The DSS may also be deployed in arrays to replace a central storage site, providing an evolutionary path for HARBOR customers to migrate off the mainframe. Storage repositories can be established on lower priced mid-range systems immediately. A future release of HARBOR will allow the control point to be moved in a non-disruptive manner, if necessary. The ability of the DSS to restore data without the use of the enterprise server is also expected in a later release.

The DSS will be available for OS/2 in the first quarter of 1996, with NT and UNIX UNIX
