UCM Unified Change Management
UCM Universal Content Management (Stellent, Inc.
), the world's fourth largest university, has selected Enterasys for a $2.7 million network infrastructure project. UCM selected Enterasys' switching and network management solutions to build an infrastructure providing the highest levels of network security and performance, and to support current and future applications such as on-demand video conferencing See videoconferencing.

, telemedicine and high-resolution digital images.

The new network infrastructure provides information and services for the institution's teaching, research, and administrative departments, and will increase the overall efficiency of the University's processes and systems. The project's objectives include increased productivity, security and manageability, as well as supporting a versatile portfolio of services for a wide range of users.

The University utilizes Enterasys' Matrix switches to deliver standards-based Gigabit Ethernet An Ethernet standard that transmits at 1 Gbps. Used mostly to connect high-end workstations and servers as well as for network backbones, Gigabit Ethernet transmits full duplex from point to point using switches and half duplex in a shared environment (CSMA/CD) using a hub.  throughout the network, while leveraging its original network resources. The modular architecture of Enterasys' Matrix switching platform provides UCM with a migration path to future technologies while protecting its initial technology investments.

"Thanks to the new network, we can increase both the effectiveness and productivity of the University, thus optimizing our investment," said Mighel Baena, director of information technology for the Universidad Complutense. "This has been possible mostly due to the technology of Enterasys Networks, which has allowed us to continue using existing equipment and protect our previous investments, while simultaneously offering the required flexibility and scalability to integrate new technologies in the future."

In addition to Enterasys Matrix switches, the solution also includes Enterasys' NetSight management software, providing the University's IT staff a higher level of network control and security, increasing the productivity of its staff and the effectiveness of the network's security controls. UCM plans to leverage its new network capabilities with future projects, including remote software implementation (through disk cloning See cloning software. ), multicasting and the application of dynamic policy-based networking through Enterasys' User Personalized per·son·al·ize

-- Multimedia and image exchanges between its Somosaguas and

Moncloa campuses

-- Broadcast and videoconferencing A real time video session between two or more users or between two or more locations. Although the first videoconferencing was done with traditional analog TV and satellites, inhouse room systems became popular in the early 1980s after Compression Labs pioneered digitized video systems  capabilities between

-- Research programs, including telemedicine, image

-- Campus-wide wireless coverage for mobile network

-- High-speed Internet See broadband.  access

"Enterasys recognizes our customers' need for a network capable of accommodating future growth while simultaneously leveraging the technology investment that they already have in place," said Mark Aslett, president, Enterasys Networks. "The modular design In the context of systems engineering, modular design — or "modularity in design" — is an approach aiming to subdivide a system into smaller parts (modules) that can be independently created and then used in different systems to drive multiple functionalities.  and policy-based networking capabilities of our products deliver the network security, performance and efficiency that the Universidad Complutense requires. The new Enterasys infrastructure is poised to grow along with the University for years to come."
