Enhancements to ENvision Plus Network Management System Add Path Protection, Automated Migration Tools and Other Capabilities for DNX Networks.CHICAGO -- Eastern Research Inc., a provider of transport equipment for telecommunications access networks, today announced that its ENvision Plus network management system (NMS See NetWare Management System. ) provides operators with a network-wide path protection solution for meshed DNX DNX Departmental Network eXchange DNX Dynamic Network X-connect DNX Domain Name Exchange networks. This capability follows the company's recent introduction of new T1/E1 Automatic Protection Switching (APS) features for its flagship line of DNX digital cross-connect A network device used by telecom carriers and large enterprises to switch and multiplex low-speed voice and data signals onto high-speed lines and vice versa. It is typically used to aggregate several T1 lines into a higher-speed electrical or optical line as well as to distribute signals switch and access concentrators See remote access concentrator. , and is an overarching o·ver·arch·ing adj. 1. For network operators, ENvision Plus path protection capabilities provide another means to meet and exceed Service Level Agreements (SLAs) by minimizing service disruptions and eliminating the need for staff to perform time-consuming re-provisioning operations in the event of primary path failures. The result is improved service availability and less manual intervention required as faults occur. Designed for Eastern's large and growing DNX customer base, the fourth release (1.3) of its ENvision Plus NMS now includes support for end-to-end path protection in DNX-1u, DNX-11/88, and S-DNX networks. Using priority-based routing software employing a shortest path algorithm, ENvision Plus can determine all of the paths between any two nodes in a DNX network. When ENvision Plus detects a failure in an intermediate hop, it dynamically re-provisions DNX cross-connects in order to create a new path between the two end nodes affected by the intermediate outage out·age n. 1. ENvision Plus path protection adds an important layer of network resiliency The ability to recover from a failure. The term may be applied to hardware, software or data. to Eastern's T1/E1 and OC3/STM1 APS and protection switch-based device protection (PSX-5300). These layers of functionality work together as a comprehensive solution to create highly reliable transport networks. "Since its launch over a year ago, ENvision Plus has become a strategic management platform for several large, mission-critical transport networks both domestically and internationally," noted Ned Viands, product line manager of network management platforms at Eastern Research. "With this release of ENvision Plus, we've not only added significant enhancements in the areas of network resilience resilience (r n through DNX path protection, but we've also made it easy for existing DNX customers to migrate to an ENvision Plus managed environment." Simplifying Migration to ENvision Plus To make it seamless for customers currently operating DNX networks to provide path protection or other ENvision Plus value-added capabilities, release 1.3 includes powerful utilities that simplify the introduction of the NMS into existing networks. "Node Discovery" allows ENvision Plus to import DNX local configuration databases into the ENvision Plus database. "Connection Conversion" converts local DNX connections to ENvision Plus managed connections, allowing them to be monitored, (path) protected, assigned a routing priority, searched, and much more. Collectively, these new features enable existing DNX customers to quickly realize the benefits of ENvision Plus regardless of the size of the current DNX network. Other ENvision Plus Capabilities In addition to path protection and automated network migration and upgrade tools, ENvision Plus offers operators streamlined connection provisioning and enhanced fault management. Streamlined Connection Provisioning To overcome the challenges of provisioning connections through multiple network elements, ENvision Plus provides unique "connection wizards" that save significant time by enabling the provisioning of hundreds or even thousands of connections using a single process. These powerful capabilities are enhanced with text and graphical-based trace utilities that allow operators to visualize connections in a topological map In cartography and geology, a topological map refers to a map that has been simplified so that only vital information remains and unnecessary detail has been removed. These maps lack scale, and distance and direction are subject to change and variation, but the relationship between view. Enhanced Fault Management ENvision Plus dramatically simplifies trouble correction procedures by consolidating network health information into a single intuitive graphical view that eliminates the need to toggle To alternate back and forth between two states. toggle - To change a bit from whatever state it is in to the other state; to change from 1 to 0 or from 0 to 1. This comes from "toggle switches", such as standard light switches, though the word "toggle" actually refers to between event/alarm, map and device views in order to correlate information.
