Engineous Software Presents Award-Winning Paper at the 51st Joint Army-Navy-NASA-Air Force Propulsion Meeting.

Business Editors, High Tech Writers

CARY, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 18, 2002

Engineous Software, provider of integration, automation, and design optimization See automatic design optimization.  software, and related strategic services, announced today they were recipients of a "Best Paper" award from the JANNAF JANNAF Joint Army Navy NASA Air Force  Modeling and Simulation Subcommittee.

Dr. Patrick Koch, Lead Engineer of Advanced Technology and Applications for Engineous, will present the paper, "Simulation-Based Design in the Face of Uncertainty" at the 51st Joint Army-Navy-NASA Air Force propulsion meeting, held on November 18-21.

Engineous received the honor in the area of System Analysis and Modeling. The paper presents a formal strategy for "designing for quality". Dr. Koch mathematically formulates the concepts of design reliability and design robustness, with the more recent concepts of six sigma Not to be confused with Sigma 6.
Six Sigma is a set of practices originally developed by Motorola to systematically improve processes by eliminating defects.[1] A defect is defined as nonconformity of a product or service to its specifications.
.

"While most engineering design problem formulations and solution strategies are deterministic, based on assumptions and nominal behavior, very few real engineering problems are void of uncertainty. The six sigma strategies presented in this paper are implemented to address the inherent uncertainties found in an engineering design problem," said Dr. Koch. Probabilistic design strategies are applied in the paper to the design of a pump impeller, using simulation tools from Concepts NREC NREC National Robotics Engineering Center (Pittsburgh, PA)
NREC Natural Resources Education Center
NREC National Rural Enterprise Centre (UK)
NREC Non-Residential Energy Code
, one of Engineous' application software partners.

Many of the methodologies outlined in the paper were significant in the development of six sigma design tools in iSIGHT software. The development effort was so well received that the initiative was partially funded by General Motors. Today, many of Engineous' customers have benefited from the application of these Six Sigma tools: improving the quality of designs while satisfying design requirements, leading to improved customer satisfaction and reduced warranty costs. Additionally, iSIGHT provides an integration framework for DFSS DFSS Design For Six Sigma
DFSS Defence Force School of Signals (Australian Defence Force)
DFSS Decision Frontier Solutions Suite (Informix)
DFSS Dielectric Frequency Selective Surface
tools that customers may already use within their organizations.

Dr. Koch's presentation is in keeping with the organization's goal to promote and exchange technical information in the fields of missile, space, and propulsion. The presentation begins at 3 pm, Tuesday, November 19, at the Hotel Royal Plaza in Lake Buena Vista, FL. The paper will be available to download free from the Engineous website - http://www.engineous.com.
