iSIGHT Software and Engineous Expertise Add Value to Multi-Year,

Multi-Million Dollar Project

Engineous Software, Inc., provider of award-winning design exploration and optimization iSIGHT software, announces its participation in a $21.5M program with $10.5M funding support from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)'s Advanced Technology Program. The Federated Intelligent Product Environment (FIPER) project, a joint venture with BF Goodrich Aerospace Aerostructures Group (Chula Vista, CA), General Electric Aircraft Engines (Cincinnati, OH) together with GE Corporate Research and Development (Niskayuna, NY), Ohio University (Athens, OH), and Parker Hannifin Corp. (Mentor, OH), will develop and demonstrate broadly applicable technologies to transform product design processes. The goal is to create an open software environment accessible across platforms and locations that would make the product design process concurrent with manufacturing. Successful implementation of the technologies and methodologies brought about by the FIPER team will result in reductions in product development and manufacturing costs and time to market, as well as product quality improvements.

Engineous Software, Inc. will serve as the commercialization agent for the output of the FIPER project. From the start of the project, Engineous will be involved with most of the development efforts, particularly those relating to the software architecture and design services that will include multidisciplinary optimization, design of experiments, six-sigma design, approximations, and other technologies. This extensive participation will allow for a successful transition from proof-of-concept to commercialization. Engineous will retain sole commercialization rights of the technology developed under this program.

FIPER will be an open software environment distributed across platforms and locations offering Web-based services that can be used in designing and making a broad range of products. Among the planned innovations, technology will be developed that links product requirement analysis to product geometry and automates design tasks. A central challenge will be to design an architecture that can fully integrate proprietary tools, including three leading computer-aided design (CAD) platforms. In addition, knowledge-based systems will be designed to automatically revise component geometry in response to analyses of cost, performance, and producibility issues, which will be integrated into the knowledge base. Initial FIPER demonstrations will focus on a jet engine, nacelle (shelter structure for the engine), and fuel nozzle.

The project is administrated by the Ohio Aerospace Institute (Cleveland, OH) and is expected to last four years. FIPER was one of only 40 projects selected for award from the 437 proposals received in 1999 NIST Advanced Technology Program
