Engineering company wins contracts throughout the UK and Europe; A commercial feature in association with AKER KVAERNER.

THIS year has brought significant success for Stockton-based Aker Kvaerner Engineering Services (Aker Kvaerner). The company has secured projects on Teesside, throughout the UK and mainland Europe, with most of the projects using Stockton-based employees for engineering design.

In March, SembCorp Utilities UK agreed to invest pounds 36m in a new Combined Heat and Power (CHP) project to enhance its supply of utilities at the Wilton International site. SembCorp signed an agreement with Aker Kvaerner to provide the engineering design, construction and commissioning work for the CHP project, which will embrace a gas turbine and heat recovery steam generator. Aker Kvaerner's contract value is pounds 26m.

In the water industry Aker Kvaerner carry out engineering services for some of the major water companies in the UK.

One such local company is Northumbrian Water Ltd (NWL), which in June of this year awarded Aker Kvaerner a pounds 28m contract to design, construct, install and commission a facility to extend the treatment capabilities of the existing regional sludge treatment centre (RSTC) at Bran Sands on Teesside, in the UK.

Within the nuclear industry Aker Kvaerner carries out engineering services for client sites all around the UK. Aker Kvaerner and joint venture partnerships have secured more than pounds 50m of nuclear services work since the start of the year.

The most recent contract award was in October 2007. Aker Kvaerner was awarded a pounds 16m contract by Magnox Electric Limited, to design, build and install a plant for the retrieval and encapsulation of wet intermediate level wastes (ILW) at Hunterston A Site in West Kilbride, Scotland. The project is part of the site's nuclear decommissioning programme and will commence immediately with a 38-month project duration. Plant start up is expected in July 2010.

Within the process industries Aker Kvaerner continues to develop its client portfolio and is currently carrying out a multi-million pound, engineering term services contract with Chevron, for work at the Pembroke Refinery in Wales, UK.

The scope of work involves the supply of engineering services to the refinery operation including design, procurement and construction management support.

In Europe Aker Kvaerner is providing deliveries to Iberian Minerals Corporation's (formerly PGM Ventures) new processing plant at its Aguas Tenidas mine in southwest Spain. The mine is about 80km west-northwest of the city of Seville.

The scope includes engineering, procurement, commissioning and construction management services. This award follows the successful completion by Aker Kvaerner of the design study for the copper, zinc and lead processing plant at the mine. The plant is scheduled to be completed in 2008.

The strong order backlog has meant Aker Kvaerner has been recruiting heavily for engineering positions this year.
