It will provide intensive, interactive training sessions and case-study discussions for the commercial, industrial and institutional building sectors for new construction, renovations and O&M. The Engineering Green Buildings conference will serve as a forum for introducing green building processes and products into the non-residential mechanical-engineering community. It will also provide an opportunity for the mechanical-engineering community to learn or refine engineering skills to meet the challenges of green-building design, construction, operations, maintenance, and commissioning. In addition, attendees will learn the costs and benefits of green buildings and understand that "greening" a building means making it perform better with respect to energy, economics, the environment, and human health, safety and comfort. Critical to the green movement is the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council, provides a suite of standards for environmentally sustainable construction. (USGBC USGBC United States Green Building Council LEED) program, a voluntary national standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. While LEED-NC is a standard intended for new construction and major renovation projects, LEED-EB LEED-EB Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Existing Buildings (US Green Building Council USGBC) , a similar rating system for existing buildings, is now in its pilot phase. Shifting the focus of green building from design quality to performance quality, LEED-EB will also shift the primary players from developers and architects to building owner-operators and engineers. This shift in the green-building market is the impetus for the Engineering Green Buildings conference.
