Demolition and reconstruction of the 60-year-old, three-level FDR Drive posed numerous problems for construction logistics, threatening severe disruption to the traveling public. The design for the roadway alternative replicates the traffic carrying capacity carrying capacity the number of animal units that a farm or area will carry on a year round basis, including that needed for conservation of winter feed. Usually stated as dry cows or dry sheep equivalents per hectare. of FDR Drive, and preserves entrances and exits. The southern portion of the outboard detour roadway, constructed over the East River, consists of a concrete deck on steel stringers spanning 100 feet between bents of 54-inch diameter steel caissons. The northern portion runs at-grade. A busy FDR Drive service road and haphazard parking lots had long limited the public's access to the East River waterfront. Working with Manhattan's Community Board #6 and other consultants, Frankfurt, developed a plan that would relocate the service road, reorganize parking areas, realign re·a·lign tr.v. re·a·ligned, re·a·lign·ing, re·a·ligns 1. To put back into proper order or alignment. 2. To make new groupings of or working arrangements between. driveways and sidewalks, and address complicated utility issues. These changes created a 90-foot strip of shoreline that has become Stuyvesant Cove Park. The once dilapidated shoreline has been redeveloped with landscaping, paved walkways, a bike path, and other features. The project is among 175 engineering projects nationwide being recognized by ACEC ACEC American Council of Engineering Companies (formerly American Consulting Engineers Council) ACEC American Consulting Engineers Council (now American Council of Engineering Companies) for 2005. |
