Engine Manufacturers Seek Extension for Proper Review of EPA Diesel Report.

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 18, 1999--

The Engine Manufacturers Association (EMA (1) (Enterprise Management Architecture) An earlier strategic plan from Digital for integrating network, system and application management. It provided the operating environment for managing a multi-vendor network. ) is calling for at least a six-week extension to properly review the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA EPA eicosapentaenoic acid.

) meeting Dec. 1, leaving interested parties and scientific panel members only a two-week review period.

"This is a major document on the health effects of diesel exhaust that will be used by EPA to justify future regulation," said Glenn Keller, EMA Executive Director. "EPA is unnecessarily forcing this report through the scientific approval process without allowing sufficient time for a meaningful review by the impacted users of diesel power."

Preliminary industry assessment indicates there are still some major problems with the document. "More importantly," stated Keller, "the agency's summary statement that diesel exhaust is highly likely to cause lung cancer lung cancer, cancer that originates in the tissues of the lungs. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States in both men and women. Like other cancers, lung cancer occurs after repeated insults to the genetic material of the cell.  is in conflict with EPA's acknowledgement that there is insufficient evidence insufficient evidence n. a finding (decision) by a trial judge or an appeals court that the prosecution in a criminal case or a plaintiff in a lawsuit has not proved the case because the attorney did not present enough convincing evidence.  to quantify any cancer risk associated with breathing ambient levels of diesel exhaust."

"More time is simply needed for an adequate scientific peer review to consider the information and conclusions in the report," stressed Keller. "There is absolutely no reason to allow only a two-week review period of this critical document other than EPA wanting to limit the CASAC discussion and get this report behind them."
