Engim, Inc., developers of silicon technology that dramatically expands the manageability, security and capacity of wireless LAN infrastructure, today announced its demonstration of a new Wi-Fi access point reference design at the Smart Networks Developer Forum (SNDF), sponsored by Freescale Semiconductor, a wholly owned subsidiary of Motorola Inc. The new Wi-Fi access point enables network vendors to rapidly deliver enterprise-class Multi-Service WLAN solutions with the reliability, performance, security and capacity of wired networks.

The ground-breaking multi-channel access point reference design is based on Engim's EN-3000 multi-channel WLAN radio chipset, and Freescale Semiconductor's PowerQUICC II(TM) MPC8247 processor. The design underscores the ability of Engim-based multi-channel wireless solutions powered by Freescale communications processors to eliminate the unpredictable performance drop-offs that now plague enterprise WLANs, and to provide the throughput and manageability to support the performance-driven applications and services that cannot be reliably supported by today's single-channel 802.11 network solutions.

The SNDF demonstration reflects recent Tolly Group findings on the sustainable performance levels of single-channel and emerging multi-channel 802.11 solutions under real-world enterprise conditions, and the dramatic improvements in performance, stability and multi-service support enabled by Engim's multi-channel radio chipset and the PowerQuicc II MPC8247 processor. The comprehensive test proved single-channel wireless solutions to be vulnerable to sharp performance drop-offs in ordinary enterprise conditions, where client mixes and the distances between users and access points changed regularly.
