This week in Phoenix during International Congress, Dr. Shin Ishimaru from Tokyo Medical Center Japan and Dr. Marcelo Cerezo from the Hospital Espanol in La Plata Argentina presented their respective clinical results of the Endologix technology.

The company manufactures endoluminal grafts (ELGs) for the treatment of aortic aneurysms. The ELG can be delivered to the aneurysm site via the femoral (leg) artery, which eliminates the need for a major abdominal surgery. Patients are typically discharged 2-3 days following the procedure.

The papers reported technical success rates of 96% and 91.6% respectively, as well as desirable results during the follow up period. This Congress, sponsored by the International Society of Endovascular Specialists, is an annual event attended by well over 1,000 leading experts from around the world involved with less invasive treatments for cardiovascular disease.

On Tuesday evening, Feb. 12, Dr. Edward B. Diethrich performed a successful implant of the company's ELG, the PowerLink(TM) System. The procedure was broadcast live before an audience during the Public Forum.

Recently Endologix announced it had signed a definitive merger agreement with Radiance Medical Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:RADX).

Commenting on the recent merger announcement Franklin D. Brown, chairman and CEO of Endologix, stated: "We believe that the available cash of the merged companies will be sufficient to enable Endologix to obtain FDA marketing approval of its PowerLink AAA device. This will also provide investors the opportunity to invest in a public company that is focused on the rapidly emerging AAA markets."

Endologix is currently selling its products through distributors in Europe and selected markets outside of the United States. The company is conducting its ongoing human clinical trial in the United States with plans to obtain marketing approval to introduce its products into the United States market in 2004.

Analysts estimate that the global market for endoluminal stents to treat abdominal aortic aneurysms could reach $600 million by the year 2005.

Approximately 190,000 people in the United States are diagnosed each year with abdominal aortic aneurysms, which is a weakening of the wall of the aorta. Abdominal aortic aneurysms are the 13th leading cause of death in the United States. Analysts estimate that the global market for ELGs to treat abdominal aortic aneurysms could reach $500 million by the year 2003.
