Ending textiles quotas costs more jobs.


Textile firm WestPoint Stevens announced on January 11 that it would lay off 2,465 employees (21 percent of its total work force) and close five of its 24 plants in the United States. The cutbacks are a direct result of the January 1 cancellation of quotas previously holding down the amount of imported textiles. Plants to be closed include two in Clemson, South Carolina South Carolina, state of the SE United States. It is bordered by North Carolina (N), the Atlantic Ocean (SE), and Georgia (SW).
