Encore Media Corporation Acquires Over 300 Titles from Paramount Pictures
New Line, Goldwyn and Worldvision Also Add to EMC's
Impressive Inventory of Movie Product
ENGLEWOOD, Colo., Jan. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- In a continuing effort to offer the highest quality and best variety of programming to its viewers now and in the future, Encore Media Corporation ("EMC (1) (EMC Corporation, Hopkinton, MA, www.emc.com) The leading supplier of storage products for midrange computers and mainframes. Founded in 1979 by Richard J. Egan and Roger Marino, EMC has developed advanced storage and retrieval technologies for the world's largest companies. ") has announced that it has secured a licensing agreement with Paramount Pictures which will add 300 titles to the company's inventory of movies. In addition, the Company has acquired the rights to films from New Line Cinema, The Samuel Goldwyn Company and Worldvision. The total investment among the four studios is estimated at more than $40 million for over 700 titles. The announcement was made today by Steve Bell, president of Encore Entertainment Group. "Over the course of a few short years, Encore Media has become the largest volume buyer in the industry," said Elisabeth Glass, senior vice president, program acquisitions for Encore Entertainment Group. "Our agreements with Paramount, New Line, Goldwyn and Worldvision will bring all of our Encore networks an infusion of exciting, popular films." Among the Paramount titles to be featured on EMC's networks are: 48 Hrs., Airplane!, Chinatown, Crocodile Dundee, Fatal Attraction, Top Gun, Terms of Endearment and Witness. Under the terms of the agreement, EMC will have Paramount product available for its channels into the year 2005. "Encore is an important player in pay television," said Jack Waterman, president, Worldwide Pay Television, Paramount Pictures, "and we are pleased to expand our relationship with them and be a part of their overall growth." EMC will acquire 50 titles from New Line Cinema, including The Player, Hoop Dreams, Menace II Society, Nightmare on Elm Street and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. "Encore is buying for the future," said David Spiegelman, executive vice president, TV Sales. "They are positioning themselves to be the preeminent movie networks and, by shoring up on quality programming, they are fast becoming just that." The Samuel Goldwyn Company licensed 74 titles to EMC. Among those are such classics as South Pacific, Oklahoma, The Bishop's Wife, Guys & Dolls, Wuthering Heiqhts, The Best Years of Our Lives and Henry V. The Company's agreement with Worldvision includes westerns and mysteries from Republic Pictures and Carolco-produced films such as Basic Instinct and Terminator. EMC is the largest provider of cable and satellite-delivered television channels in the United States, currently counting more than 28 million pay units through its ownership of: ENCORE(SM), an affordable premium service featuring hit movies from the '60s, '70s and '8Os as well as plex-encore 1(SM), theme by day (combined more than 11 million pay units); six Thematic Multiplex services -- Love Stories-encore 2(R), Westerns-encore 3(R), Mystery-encore 4(SM), Action-encore 5(SM), True Stories & Drama-encore 6(R), and WAM WAM - Intermediate language for compiled Prolog, used by the Warren Abstract Machine. In addition, EMC's International Channel(SM) offers multi-lingual basic cable programming in 29 different Asian, European and Middle Eastern languages to 7 million subscribers in the U.S. and Latin America.
