These partnerships provide Emtec clients innovative solutions to help meet compliance, security and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1996.

According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) website, Title I of HIPAA protects health insurance coverage for workers and their families when
(HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act of 1996, Public Law 104-191) Also known as the "Kennedy-Kassebaum Act," this U.S. law protects employees' health insurance coverage when they change or lose their jobs (Title I) and provides standards for patient health, ) requirements associated with electronic health record (EHR (Electronic Health Records) Computerized medical records that bring patient care into the digital age and save time, money and lives. The push to adopt comprehensive electronic documentation between doctors' offices and hospital settings intensified after the RAND ) implementation.

With the implementation of EHR systems, healthcare organizations are experiencing an increase in privacy incidents involving employees and affiliates conducting inappropriate and illegal patient record access. By partnering with FairWarning, Emtec clients can now implement the Privacy Surveillance application, built on Sun Microsystems' technology, to systematically identify users who are engaging in improper patient access patterns indicative of snooping, identity theft or other malicious behaviors. Currently deployed in over 250 hospitals and over 900 clinics, FairWarning provides out-of-the-box support for over 100 leading EHR systems such as Epic, Cerner, Eclipsys, GE, McKesson, MEDITECH, and Siemens.

In addition to privacy concerns, EHR brings increased data storage needs as healthcare facilities are required by law to maintain EHRs for up to two years after an individual is deceased. This is a significant requirement as it can substantially raise storage costs for healthcare organizations where budgets are tight. Through its partnership with BridgeHead, Emtec now offers healthcare data management solutions with a low TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) that help reduce storage costs, improve disaster recovery, and help healthcare organizations to meet these compliancy requirements. BridgeHead's HEAT (Healthcare Enterprise Archive Topology), also built on Sun Microsystems' technology, provides seamless integration with PACS (Picture ArChiving System) A storage and management system for high-resolution images. Typically pertaining to the medical field, images such as X-rays, MRIs and CAT scans require a greater amount of storage than other industries.  (Picture Archiving and Communications System), HCIS HCIS Health Care Information System (British Library)

The appliance can be optionally upgraded to include BridgeHead's PACStore software, a vendor-neutral DICOM (medical, standard) DICOM - (From Digital Imaging and COmmunications in Medicine) A standard developed by ACR-NEMA (American College of Radiology - National Electrical Manufacturer's Association) for communications between medical imaging devices.  (Digital Imaging in Communications and Medicine) archive. PACStore enables HEAT to receive data from any modality or digital imaging system that supports the DICOM protocol. This allows for easy access to PACS data even if the application of choice changes in the future.

"As healthcare organizations migrate to EHR systems they are looking for solutions that are cost-effective, easy to manage and help address the numerous HIPAA mandates," said Chris Mallazzo, Director of Healthcare Solutions, Emtec, Inc. "Partnering with healthcare technology leaders such as BridgeHead Software and FairWarning[R] demonstrates our ongoing commitment to developing "best-in-class" solutions for our healthcare clients."
