THE SET-UP Ashley, Sarah and Katie are planning a Valentine's party at Katie's house. They're all gonna pitch in and pull this thing off. Since Ashley is notorious for last-minute bailing, the other girls make her double-swear she won't skip on the party prepping. They agree to meet at noon the next day to start decorating and making the chow.

THE DITCH At 11 a.m. the following day, Ashley calls to say she totally spaced on previous plans to shop with her mom. She's available in the evening, though. Sarah and Katie decide not to wait. They have endless batches of heart-shaped cookies to bang out, not to mention all those red and pink balloons they have to blow up (hyperventilate hy·per·ven·ti·late

. But if she has an excuse rap sheet longer than your guest list, you have a right to feel let down. And you need to say something to her about it because maybe she has no clue she upset you. Say nothing, and it will likely happen again. If she's the type who bails when she finds something "better" to do, you probably ought to consider re-evaluating the friendship.

 and forgetful by nature, learn to accept your friend the way she is. And that means not setting yourself up for a fall. You know she's not dependable, so don't expect her to commit to stuff. You don't have to ditch her but, when you need a friend you can count on, include somebody else.
