Employees benefit consultants/managers: ranked by number of L.A. County employees involved in benefits services.EXECUTIVE SUMMARY DELOITTE & Touche USA LLP tops the list of employee benefits consultants and managers for the second consecutive year. Benefits consulting is just one segment of the tax audit and advisor's business. No. 2 Watson Wyatt Worldwide Inc. and No. 3 Mercer Human Resource Consulting held onto their respective spots. Watson Wyatt saw its number of benefits consultants hold steady at 180 compared to a year ago. Mercer, which merged with Marsh Inc. in 2005, reported a five-person increase locally, bringing its total number of benefits consultants to 174. Benefits consultants provide a wide array of services, usually to mid-and large-sized companies. The firms advise and sometimes administer medical and dental plans, life insurance plans, retirement and savings plans, and provide human resources consulting. The}' may also provide information on disability insurance and workers" compensation. Overall, the 20 largest benefits consulting firms employ 1.400 consultants locally and more than 22,000 total consultants worldwide. [GRAPHICS OMITTED] THE PACESETTER DELOITTE & TOUCHE USA LLP WITH 204 benefits consultants in L.A. County, the New York-based firm leads the list of the largest consulting firms in the county. "It's important to understand what is most important to employees and align the cost of programs with their goals," said David Lusk, principal, Deloitte Consulting LLP. The majority of Deloitte's clients are large companies with 500 employees or more. Lusk has seen companies consider plan design changes, which can result in shifting costs to participants. One of the biggest problems with medical care is that a small percentage of the participants in a plan usually account for the majority of costs. Lusk has seen companies try to educate employees about alternatives and he sees the Internet a valuable resource. "People should broaden their understanding of what options are available and use online tools to find alternative courses of treatment or generic alternatives to name brand medicines." he said. For small businesses, finding medical care solutions can be difficult because companies with fewer employees do not have access to some of the programs offered to larger employers. "Small businesses can look for programs that have annual maximums or lower lifetime maximums. They can look for programs with higher deductibles that can protect employees from higher cost items that could be catastrophic," said Lusk.
