Employee ownership. (Booking for Success).

The turbulent nature of today's business environment requires new ways of approaching employee compensation to remain competitive and profitable. The old notion of providing security and a decent wage in exchange for dedicated service and loyalty to the company no longer exists. Employee ownership plans are proving to be a powerful reward strategy for companies looking to lure and retain the cream of the crop.

In Employee Ownership: The New Source of Competitive Advantage, authors Carol Beatty, director of the school of industrial relations at Queen's University, and Harvey Schachter, Globe and Mail columnist, look at how 10 Canadian companies have been faring under employee ownership. They examine issues such as ownership and control, the operation of a board of directors that includes employees, and employee motivation.

The companies studied are drawn from across the country, including samples from the high-tech sector, where employee ownership has been a hot topic.
