UNDERLINING ITS COMMITMENT TO LATIN AMERICA, Emery Worldwide's expansion plans continue to enhance its air and ocean freight services in several key markets, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico.

"We're very confident that the 21st Century will bring new opportunities to the already solid foundation that we built during the 1990s, which was a decade of dynamic changes," says Ron Young, Emery's vice president of Latin America. "Privatizations, trade liberalization and regionalization, and economic reforms brought increased foreign investment into the area and created a very exciting climate. The wave of the future in our industry is logistics--the ability to get product to the consumer in a timely manner, providing customers with sophisticated information systems and streamlined shipment processes."

Emery Worldwide specializes in premium, time-definite transportation services for business-to-business shippers of heavyweight cargo. It provides global air and ocean freight transportation, logistics management and customs brokerage services to 229 countries. Since entering Latin America 20 years ago, Emery has grown to serve 17 Latin countries plus nine locations in the Caribbean.

The company plans to open multi-user facilities later this year in Guadalajara, Mexico; Buenos Aires, Argentina and in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Last year in Argentina, a major single source logistics operation began for General Motors.

"Emery also has established a dedicated customer logistics facility in Mexico City, where we provide warehouse inventory management and order fulfillment for a major software distributor," Young explains.

For Mexico, Emery services the four major business markets with its own aircraft, making flights between its U.S. hub five days a week and Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara and Chihuahua. To meet increased demand, Emery in February 1999 opened a new 14,000-square-foot freight facility in Monterrey. It also supports the Latin America market with a new 120,000-square-foot facility in Miami.

Emery focuses on six major industries in Latin America: telecommunications, electronics/high-tech, heavy equipment, automotive, pharmaceuticals and textiles. It derives 80 percent of its Latin America business from Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Peru. The company also is the No. 1 air carrier of garments on hangers for the fashion industry of Central America.

Last year, Emery introduced its Gold Priority product into Mexico to provide guaranteed overnight service there. Young says the program will be expanded to other points in Latin America in the future. Emery also launched its Global Project management services for construction, mining and energy development industries in the region.

The company has invested US$75 million in information technology to enable customers to trace and track shipments at every stage of the transportation cycle, including tracing through the Internet. Customers can also use special software to reduce paperwork and inventories, billing transactions and analyze and manage imports.

In recognition of Emery's achievement and innovation, the company was chosen "Forwarder of the Year" in 1998 by The International Air Cargo Association (TIACA). The association lauded Emery for "successfully managing the transition from a traditional forwarder to a modern logistics resource with a full range of services for the shipper."

Young sees the currency troubles in Brazil and the impact of the Asian financial crisis as temporary. "These economic conditions are only a pause," he says. "Latin America is finally getting due recognition in the world of global commerce. Europe and Asia have long been leaders and they are mature markets, but this is certainly an emerging region with tremendous opportunities for companies. It has a significant population base with a tremendous thirst for imported and manufactured commodities. From a transportation perspective, it's an exciting part of the world."
