Pediatric program; v.63 RA645 The coexistence of malnutrition and obesity, a phenomenon afflicting many countries as their economies develop and food availability increases, is also known as 'nutrition transition.' The nutrition transition poses the challenge of how to balance short-term benefits of food availability with long-term risks of increased metabolic diseases. A 2008 workshop held in New Delhi, India, examined the origins of malnutrition and its links to obesity, reviewed the possible mechanisms of metabolic injury, and evaluated strategies for prevention of obesity and other conditions related to overnutrition in emerging countries. Papers from the workshop are presented here. Some specific topics addressed include new approaches to optimizing early diets, metabolism of methionine in vivo, the role of epigenetics in mediating environmental effects on phenotype, and prevention of low birthweight. Three regional case studies from India, China, and Africa are presented. The audience for the book includes pediatricians, perinatologists, endocrinologists, public health scientists, and epidemiologists. Kalhan is affiliated with the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine, Case Western Reserve University. ([c]2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR) |
