Emerging New York Architects (ENYA ENYA Ecumenical Network for Youth Action ) weighs in on what do with this unique landscape this month at the American Institute of Architects The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is a professional organization for architects in the United States. Organized in 1857, the Institute conducts various activities and programs to support the profession and enhance its public image, including periodically awarding the AIA  exhibit "Southpoint: from Ruin to Rejuvenation Rejuvenation

." the exhibit features edgy, thought-provoking designs offered up by emerging architects from around the globe.

The exhibit features dozens of renderings and models from emerging architects, including those of three overall winners, the winner of the Historic Preservation Historic preservation is the act of maintaining and repairing existing historic materials and the retention of a property's form as it has evolved over time. When considering the United States Department of Interior's interpretation: "Preservation calls for the existing form,  Award and the winner of the Student Prize. "Emerging" is defined by ENYA as students and young professionals who have completed their education within the past ten years.

The basic ground rules of this ideas contest were that an arts center had to be part of the design, providing an opportunity for patients from nearby Coler Goldwater Hospital and other island residents to hold visual arts performances, theater events and art openings.

The project also called for making Southpoint a magnet for artists hailing from places other than Roosevelt Island and required that the area be accessible to all. Paris-based Nina Baniahmad's took top prize for her proposal, which featured swooping canopies and long decks. Brooklyn architect, Eric Brodfehrer, won the Historic Preservation Award, and New York architects, Domenic Leong and Brian Price, took third overall with their Southpoint Park idea, which involved turning the waters surrounding the south tip of Roosevelt Island into a "Mobile Art Park" complete with two-story "art barges" that could be repositioned to complement any event.

Leong and Price are two of the founding members of PARA- para-

"I guess you could say we're not quite commercial," Leong said. "But that's not to say what we do won't ever develop."

The exhibition runs through the month at the American Institute of Architects New York Chapter, 536 LaGuardia Place.
