Emedicine: An online ENT textbook.

A fantastic revolution in the way doctors and the public obtain medical information is taking place. The first major free, multiauthor online medical reference text for ear, nose, and throat is near completion by Emedicine. It is part of a larger humanitarian attempt to provide the world with 60 free medical textbooks written and published on the Internet. The textbooks can be updated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and include audio, video, and unlimited pictures. Currently, 8,000 physicians from 1,000 teaching institutions are working on the project. Emedicine: Emergency Medicine is already available and is being used as an online resource. The editor for otolaryngology otolaryngology

The founders believe that what sets their site apart from other medical information databases is the cutting-edge nature of the information available, since doctors who author these texts can log on to the site and update their chapters anytime, day or night. There is no cost to users, since each online reference will be supported by online revenue. Systems have been established to help avoid erroneous or misleading material. The information is peer-reviewed and has editorial oversight. Since almost 40% of the Web searches done by the general public seek medically related information, the impact on how medicine is provided could be enormous. Massive changes are taking place in our methods of communication. The one sure thing is that nothing will ever again be the same.
